Power Engineering and Industrial Systems

The research group focuses on the development of new technologies in the area of generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy and heat and on mathematical modelling and optimizations of energy-intensive industrial systems. Within the generation of electrical energy, the team is concerned with computations and modelling of coal-fired and gas-fired power plants and of the secondary circuit of nuclear power plants in order to optimize the power efficiency, dynamics and quality of regulation of the individual systems of internal consumption of power plants. Another significant field the group deals with is modelling and optimization of hydro-power stations with a special focus on control of the parallel operation of turbines.

Other mainstays of the research program include simulations and modelling of electrical transmission and distribution networks, short-circuit calculations, reliability calculations and safety – primarily in the field of nuclear power engineering.  The group is also involved in computational modelling of mechanical and electromechanical structures, including simulations of operating conditions and undesirable conditions of structures and rotating machines.

The group closely cooperates with the Group of Power Electronics and Drives on developing new technologies exploiting high-voltage power electronics with a primary application focus on drives of feeding pumps, big and high-speed compressors and fan drives. A significant area of the research is the control of output or flows of energy, electric power quality, and reliability of electric networks, for example, new solutions and devices for compensating for earth faults occurring in insulated networks and high-impedance earthed networks.

The group is also involved in research on Smart City technologies.

Theoretical and Practical Applicability

The applicability of the group’s research outcomes can be divided into the following major areas:

  • Reduction in electrical energy consumption by optimizing the efficiency of the systems during the generation, transfer and consumption of electrical energy. One of the most significant outcomes of the group is Medium Voltage Pump Save and Medium Voltage Fan Save, which is software developed by the group in order to optimize power pumping and ventilation systems in power engineering.
  • Modelling of electrical networks. One of the most significant outcomes is mathematical models developed by the group to be applied in, among others, control and regulation of distribution networks. The outcomes are significant primarily from the point of view of the quality of regulation and prediction of the condition of a power network.  This is important primarily in the context of the increasing share of unregulated renewable sources in the total amount of electrical energy generated.
  • Safety, reliability calculations, modelling and dynamic analysis of gearing systems and investigation of conditions of electromechanical devices. The outcomes are predominantly used in nuclear power engineering and to optimize the maintenance of power units.
