Mathematical-physical Modelling and Computation

The Group of Mathematical-physical Modelling and Computation was formed in September 2011 by merging the research groups from two departments. The staff of the Department of Theory of Electrical Engineering formed the Department of Mathematical-physical Modelling and the staff of the Department of Electromechanics and Power Electronics formed the Department of Electromechanical Systems. In 2012, the Group was joined by two graduates of the Mathematical-physical Faculty of Charles University. The Group’s activities can be divided into three areas.

The principal concern of the group is the research and development of new methods of solutions to physical fields.  Within this research activity, the members of the team participate in the development of two freeware projects for the solution of physical fields by means of the FEM method: the MFEM library and the Agros2D application. The team exploits the experience gained through the implementation of these two major projects for software developed to order.

The second key area is modelling complex multiphysical problems. The experts solve these problems by means of commercial software, for example, ANSYS, COMSOL Multiphysics, CST, FEMM, MATLAB and SIMULINK. They design electrical machines, and perform heat balances, calculations of start-up characteristics of machines, and analyses of operating states, as well as calculations in the area of electromagnetic fields, flow, acoustics and high-frequency equipment.

The group also measures and tests electrical machines. The team measures the torque, speed, operating and loading characteristics and vibrations. The experts analyse noise and transient conditions in electromechanical systems.

Theoretical and Practical Applicability

The know-how of the team and the research facilities are applicable in basic and applied research and development. The calculations are applicable when developing and optimizing new devices. In these activities, the calculations replace experiments. Mathematical-physical modelling is used in case experiments are expensive, dangerous or too complex to be feasible.

Problems Currently Being Solved

One of the main activities of the Modelling Group is the development of software tailored to solving complex technical problems. This mainly concerns the Agros2D application, which solves problems described through partial differential equations. Agros2D is based on DEAL.II library. The library contains software suites for various types of analysis (for example, steady states, transient phenomena and harmonic analyses), for various physical fields (for example, electrostatic, magnetic, current, and thermal fields and fields of elastic distortions). The library features one significant attribute, namely the possibility of coupling the individual fields, thus having the capacity to solve complex technical problems. The software can be used for computations in the areas of acoustics and flow.

The Agros2D and MFEM projects are aimed at creating a sufficiently universal tool to be used by university researchers and others interested in performing practical calculations. The system is currently used by universities as a research tool and in teaching, and by several companies for development of commercial devices. Unlike commonly used commercial applications, Agros2D and MFEM can be tailored to meet the needs of specific applications by adding new modules.

Within the computation and modelling of physical fields, the group deals with modelling magnetic fields of electric machines, temperature calculations of electric machines and calculations of flow and ventilation. The team cooperates to perform temperature calculations for induction and laser treatment of metals. Some members of the team deal with calculations of acoustic fields and cooperate in the design of diffusers.

In the field of measurement and testing of electric machines, the group is currently concerned primarily with advanced methods of electric machines analysis, particularly machines with permanent magnets, taking into account their possible application in higher-performance machines.
